Facts and Events
Name[1] Jane Unknown
Gender Female
Birth[3] Abt 1590
Marriage Abt 1611 record not found in Nottinghamshire
to Gabriel Wheldon
Death[1][2] Aft 1640 likely in Massachusetts

Origins

A 1590 birth year is estimated based on the 1612 baptism of the first child and therefore an estimated 1611 marriage.

That her marriage to Gabriel Whelden is found in NO published Nottinghamshire marriages (S3) suggests the possibility that a) the marriage was done elsewhere and b) that she was therefore not born in Nottinghamshire.

Despite the submission of an LDS member of a 3 August 1617 marriage between Gabriel Whelden and Mary Davis in Arnold, no such marriage has been found after diligent search. (S3)

That no burial was found for a wife of Gabriel Whelden through 1640 supports (but does not prove) the theory that Jane was the mother of all his children. (S2)

This is the earliest mention of Gabriel's wife by name, but it is not clear whether she was the mother of Gabriel's children.

Neither the Basford registers nor the surviving bishop's transcripts up to 1640 show the burial of any woman who could have been Gabriel Whelden's wife.

There is no entry for Gabriel Whelden's marriage in the Basford marriage registers, which have been published as volume 6 of W.P.W. Philimore, Nottinghamshire Parish Registers: Marriages, 2 vols. (London: Phillimore & Co., 1898-1933). In fact, his marriage was not in any of the published Nottinghamshire marriage registers in this series. Marriages for Arnold begin in 1544 (volume 13) and show no marriages for the year 1617, despite the supposed marriage of Gabriel Whelden and Mary Davis on 3 August 1617 at Arnold, according to a member submission to the IGI.
