Facts and Events
__________________________ [edit] OverviewMuch of the family history for Jane Thompson is obtained (or inferred) from a statement made by her mother in a 1796 deposition. From this we learn that Jane was was born in County Antrim, Ireland in 1761. She migrated to America with her mother, two sisters, and perhaps her father. [1] In anycase, the three girls apparently married in America; where in America is not clear. By the time of her mothers statement, Jane, her mother Elizabeth, her sister Esther (wife of John McSpadden) were living in Jefferson County, while her other sister Mary (wife of Samuel Weir) was living in Sevier County, TN. Jane had initially married James Walker, son of Samuel Walker and Jane Patterson, His parents had settled in the Natural Bridge area of modern Rockbridge County in the 1750's, and remained there the rest of their lives. It is likely that this is where Jane and James met and married in 1786. It is not clear whether this couple remained in the Rockbridge area, or moved to Tennessee after marriage. In any event he had died by 1792, and Jane shortly thereafter remarried to widower Andrew Cowan in Jefferson County, TN. It is possible that the move to Tennessee occurred after her husbands death, in the company of her mother, and elder sister Esther, who had married John McSpadden, as all three were in Jefferson County by this time.
