Facts and Events
Birth date derived from stated age at marriage of 21 years. Quote from information collected by Trevor Williams, Melbourne: The Hobart Town Gazette, of Friday the 5th May 1843, records details of: "IMMIGRANTS RETURN (UNDER THE BOUNTY) FOR THE PERIOD 22nd NOVEMBER 1842 TO 31st MARCH 1843, INTO LAUNCESTON." The report confirms the arrival of four ships, the "Royal Saxon", the "Royal Sovereign", the "Elizabeth" and the "Jane" and lists all the passengers on these vessels. Included in the list is: "Jane CATHCART Unmarried Domestic Servant Wages: 14 to 16 pound p.a. " I can find no record of any other Jane CATHCART, or similar name, in births / marriages / deaths in the early history of Tasmania so it seems logical and correct to assume that this is our Jane and a record of her arrival in Tasmania. |
