  2. John Wiersma, Sr., one of the pioneers of Sioux County, passed away at his home in Orange City, on Sunday evening, at the age of some 74 years. He had been ailing for about a year with diabetes, which was the cause of his death. The funeral services were held Wednesday from the Christian Reformed Church at Orange City, of which he has been elder for over 25 years. Interment was made in the Orange City Cemetery.

    Deceased leaves to mourn his death a wife and eighteen children, eleven boys and seven girls, also fifty-three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was well and faborably known all over the county. He was a pioneer, coming to Sioux County in the early days. He withstood the hardships of life in the early days, and could fully remember the grasshopper times. Mr. Wiersma was a man of sterling Christian character, being a member of the Christian Reformed church of Orange City. One of his sons reside in our community and he, Johna and family attended the funeral. C. De Valois and H. Vander Naald also attended the funeral.
