James Andrew White was born in Tennessee (exact place unknown). Parents and siblings are unknown.

He is first found on the 1850 Federal Census in Pulaski Co. MO living with the family of Talton Tally and is listed as Farm Laborer. Also living in the household was Nancy Tally Travis, daughter of Talton Tally and widow of Newton Travis. By 1 Jun 1860 James and Nancy were married and living in Logan Township, Reynolds Co. Mo. The Reynolds Co courthouse burned in 1872 and the Pulaski Co courthouse burned in 1903. No marriage records prior to those dates survive in either courthouse. James and Nancy were probably married between 1 Jun 1850 and Mar 1851 (first child Joseph A was born Nov 1851).

By the 1880 Federal Census the family was living in Lafeyette Township, Scott Co, AR.

James purchased 40 acres of land in Sebastian Co AR from the Federal Government 5 Apr 1883 paying cash for the land. There are no records found to date to show that the family ever lived on this land. James took advantage of the Homestead Act of 1862 and filed for a homestead of 160 acres 16 Jul 1889. This land was located in Bates, Scott Co, AR.

Both James and Nancy died in 1896. James on 16 Aug 1896 and Nancy on 15 Dec 1896. Both are buried in the Bates Cemetery.
