J. Edward Wardwell, 72, of Forest Circle, died Sunday evening at his home after a short-term illness with cancer. He was born at Islesboro, a son of Raymond and Katherine Pendleton Wardwell, attended Islesboro schools and graduated from Islesboro High School in 1943. He served in the Army during World War II and after the war, entered the University of Maine at Orono, graduating in 1951. On Oct. 16, 1948, he married Barbara Bacon in Bangor. Mr. Wardwell lived and worked in Pittsfield for 18 years. In 1974, he and his family moved to Jay where he worked at Franklin Memorial Hospital as office manager. He later became the hospital's vice president of finance. After retirement in 1987, he spent much of his time in his hometown of Islesboro. Surviving, besides his wife, are two sons, Gary of Portland and David of Derry, N.H.; a brother, Thomas Wardwell of Portland; two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Alexandra. -Portland Press Herald 27 January 1998
