J.C. ‘Sonny’ Ward, age 87, passed away at the Broadwater County Health Center in Townsend, Wednesday morning, Feb. 8, 2006.
Sonny was born Nov. 28, 1918, in Billings, Okla., to Jim and Emma Ward. He went to school in Eddy, Okla., and married Thelma Crumrine on Dec. 9, 1937, in Tonkawa, Okla. They raised five boys, four of whom were born in Tonkawa and the youngest was born in Bartlesville, Okla. Sonny was a farmer, rancher, and custom harvester. They moved from Tonkawa to Copan, Okla., in 1949, where they farmed until they moved to Victor, Mont., in 1959. They ranched and ran a custom harvest business while in Montana and moved back to Tonkawa in 1980, where they continued to run the custom harvest business.
Sonny had many friends from Texas to Canada and was familiar with many of the wheat fields in between.
He was a member of the Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years Thelma Ward, three sisters and two grandchildren.
Survivors include five sons and their wives: Jim and Edie Ward, Townsend; Dick and Dale Ann Ward, Hamilton; Wayne ‘Skip’ and Sherry Ward, Huson; Don and Elaine Ward, Fairbanks, Alaska; J.D. and Mary Ward, North Pole, Alaska; 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at the North Valley Church of Christ, 1669 Houk Way, Stevensville. The date is pending. Townsend Funeral Chapel has completed the arrangements.
