James Turney was born on 5th May 1814 at Eaton Bray in Bedfordshire, son of Thomas and Sarah Turney. He was baptised at the village's Wesleyan Methodist chapel when he was twelve years old.
On 7th February 1836, aged 21, James married Fanny Kempson, who was from the neighbouring village of Totternhoe. They had a daughter, Rebecca, the following year, but sadly she died as a baby. In 1840 they had a son, Thomas, who was born at Stanbridge, a few miles north of Eaton Bray, but baptised in the nearby town of Luton. The 1841 census finds James, Fanny and their son Thomas living at Summer Leys back in Eaton Bray, with James working as an agricultural labourer. James and Fanny do not appear to have had any more children after Thomas.
The 1851 census finds James and Fanny still living at Eaton Bray with their son Thomas and an elderly Sarah Turney who was described as 'mother-in-law' although this term was also used to mean stepmother.
Fanny died in 1854, aged 44. James survived her by three years and died in 1857, aged about 43.

Sarah Turney's relation column originally said daughter, but this has been crossed out and replaced with mother-in-law. This term was used interchangeably with step-mother at the time. Whether Sarah was James's stepmother, or whether it was Fanny saying Sarah was her mother-in-law or something else is unclear.
