James Walter (Jimmy T.) Trankel passed away July 24, 2006, at St. Vincent's Health Care Center in Billings from complications following open heart surgery.
Jim was born to August and Mary Agnes (Mae) Trankel on Aug. 27, 1928, in Butte. Following graduation from high school in Butte, he worked for two years as a clerk for Safeway Stores. He started working at the Montana Highway Department when he was 20 years old, and worked for 30 years throughout the state of Montana as a Project Engineer before retiring from the Highway Department.
Jim married Berneeta Joan "Sally" Holeman in Butte on Sept. 2, 1950. Together they had seven children: Mary Anne Trankel, Crystal "Moree" Yetter, Susan "Gracie" Trankel Broadwater, Nancy "Nancy Jane" Harrop, Diane Lucille "Dolly Babe" Trankel, James Barry Trankel, and Thomas Alan Trankel. Jim and Sally divorced on Aug. 25, 1989.
Jim loved participating in many types of activities with his family, including bowling, horseshoes, softball and dancing. He was also a football enthusiast and loved to travel. He is survived by his loving angel of 16 years, Louise Manning; brother, Ronald Trankel and wife Betty; daughters, Susan Trankel Broadwater and husband, Kendall Broadwater, Mary Anne Trankel and husband Donald Gilder, Crystal Yetter, Nancy Jane Harrop and husband Stephen Harrop, Diane Lucille Trankel; sons James Barry Trankel and wife Arlene, Thomas Alan Trankel and wife Linda; 19 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Agnes (Mae) Trankel and father August Trankel.
A memorial service will be held at the First Assembly of God Church, 2210 Dodge Ave., Helena at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 29, 2006. A gathering of family and friends will follow at the VFW in East Helena, to celebrate Jim's life. Honorary Bearers are Donald DeBorde, Mike Michaels, Paul Lawrence, Barry Holeman, Ronald Trankel, Donald Jay Manning, Robert Manning and Kendall Broadwater. The family suggests donations to the American Heart Association.
Retz Funeral Home of Helena is assisting the family with arrangements and private family graveside services to be held in Butte.
