James was a member of the Baptist Church. He was son of Isaac and Hannah (Wixon) Townsend. James and wife Polly came from Putnam County, NY to Warren County, IL in 1855 and settled in Section 8. His first wife Polly died September 8, 1868, in Coldbrook Twp, Warren County, IL. James then married Mrs. Lavinia Ramp on February 8, 1870. James preceded Lavinia in death, after which she sued for a portion of his estate since he had left her out of his Will.
James and Polly had nine known children: Aaron B, Susan Caroline, Fanny M., William H., Sally M, Betsey, Mary, Hannah Jane, and James Jr. (James Jr. was in the 66th Reg. Illinois Vol S S. He died April 15, 1862 at Paducah, KY, age 26, from wounds received during battle in the American Civil War. He never married.)
