TRAVERSE CITY RECORD EAGLE --- 1950 -- Page 1 May 6,- Benzie Perch Plan Receiving Support--An intensive campaign launched last February by the Benzie Sportsman's Club to secure legislation designed to protect the supply of yellow perch in Lake Michigan and connecting waters and thus increase the sport of hook and line fishing in this vacation area is gaining wide support from organizations throughout Michigan. --- The Benzie group which is soearheading the campaign, initiated action at a meeting last February 17 by adopting a resolution urging passage of a new regulation or law prohibiting the taking of perch by seines or nets anywhere within three miles of the east shore of Lake Michigan and connecting waters. Members of the club believe that a screen inserted during high water period of the lake, would improve fishing by preventing fish from going over the dam, down the Betsie River and out into Lake Michigan. The son of William and Ida Tanner, he was born at Thompsonville on April 18, 1906 , and on Sept. 10, 1933 was united in marriage to Donna Smeltzer. A retired pipefitter, he was also a charter captin and was a prominent leader in organizing the charter boat opperations out of Frankfort. He was an active member of the Benzie Sportsman's Club; and belonged to the Elberta Lions, Frankfort Eagles and the old Frankfort Glider Club. He had served on the Elberta School board, and was a member of the Gilmore Township Library board at the time of his death. A daughter Theodora, preceded him in death in 1956. He is survived by his wife Donna ; and two sons William E. of Owosso and Donald of Midland; nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. The funeral is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Elberta Methodist Church. with the Rev. J. Melvin Bricker officiating. Burial will be in Gilmore Twp. cemetery. Tanner, a lifelong resident of this area, was well known for his interest in ecology ant the preservation of natural resources. He was a founding member of the Benzie Sportsman's Club and was instrumental in the getting fish planting started in Benzie lakes and streams, He was also a long - time member of the school board. Elberta Mayor Glenn Berryhill gave the official dedication; We have assembled here today to dedicate this tree to James "Bud" Tanner, who has left his worldly goods behind, for greener fields and bluer waters. We hope this tree will grow to be strong and give shade to all who may pass this way. James Tanner was a lover of the great outdoors and enjoyed fishing and hunting in this area and worked hard to preserve the natural resources of Benzie County. On hand for the ceremonies were Mrs. James Tanner and her son Don, of Midland, as well as a large group of Elberta school children and several representatives of the Lions Club. Speaking on behalf of the school Superintendent Donald McIntyre thanked the Lions for their contribution, in addition, a brief prayer was offerd by Lion Chris Common.
