TRAVERSE CITY RECORD EAGLE --- 1949 -- Page 13 May 18,- Elberta by Donna Tanner---The Elberta P.T.A. held its final meeting of the year Tuesday evening. Officers elected for next year are: president, Mrs. Allen Little; vice-president, Mrs. James Tanner; secretary, Mrs. Oral Mix; treasurer, Mrs. Einer Soderquist. The new officers were presented with corsages by the retiring president, Mrs. Richard Manke. A corsage was also presented to Mrs. L. Gray, who acted very capably as chairman of the lunch committee for the past year. The new president then took then took over the meeting and made the following appointments: mother-vice president, Mrs. Clarence Buckner; father-vice president, John Acre; teacher-vice president, Mrs. Van Dorn Bixby; lunch committee, chairman, Mrs. Allen Blacklock; program chairman, Mrs. Sheldon Gilbert. The evening's entertainment was presented by the kindergarten and first grade in charge of Miss Joan Blacklock. A playlet on health by the first graders and musical selection by the kindergarten band were greatly enjoyed. Mr. Twigg presented pins and certificates to the girls who completed their 4-H projects for the year. He also gave a short talk on the advantages of the summer camp. A luncheon was served at the close of the meeting. Eighty-seven people were present, one of the largest meetings of this year.

BENZIE BANNER -- 1961 -- Page 7 July 6,- Elberta Woman Dies At Her Home --- Mrs. Sadie Tanner, 70, died at her home in Elberta Tuesday morning, June 27. --- Born to Mr. and Mrs. John Little on May 24, 1891, she was a life-long resident of the Elberta area. --- Surviving are one son, Einar Soderquist of Elberta; one daughter, Irrene Bramer of Elberta; one step-son, Raymond Tanner of Elberta; two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Kinney of Lansing and Mrs. Rachel Peck of Elberta of Elberta; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. --- Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 30, at the Elberta Methodist church. Rev. Carol Stacer officiating, with burial in Gilmore township cemetery.

According to a Lions spokesman Queen Donna meets all of their qualifications -- she is over 30, intelligent and charming. Derby organizers are predicting that the event will include five or six heats, with a consolation and championship round. Entries are coming in from as far away as Traverse City, and one competitor has participated in three state championship derbies. The Lions Derby will begin imediately followning Saturday's National Soaring and Hang Gliding Festival parade.

A certificate of retirement will be issued to Donna very shortly. Her last day of work was Dec. 30, 1977 In all the years Donna worked she only used five hours of sick leave, said Bob Petersen, postmaster. A party was given in Donna's honor at the Pac Inn on Dec. 27, with 14 present to help her celebrate. A gift was presented to her from the group. Weslock, 89, of Elberta, died Saturday, April 26, 2003, at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital LTC Born Oct. 24, 1913, in Elberta, she was the daughter of William Paul and Eva E. (Schaeffer) Smeltzer. Donna was employed as postal clerk at the Frankfort Post Office for several years until her retirement. She was a member of Elberta United Methodist Church, the Elks and Frankfort Eagles. She enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Periwinkle garden club; she was also an avid bowler. In September 1933, she married James Tanner, who preceded her in death in 1976. She then married Charles Weslock in October 1979, and he preceded her in death in 1992. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Theadora Nan Tanner; and a sister, Lucille Dryja. Donna is survived by two sons, Donald (Rosemary) Tanner of Elberta and William E. Tanner of Frankfort; nine grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 29, from Elberta United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Greg Culver officiating. Interment will follow in Gilmore Township Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Frankfort Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes. Memorials may be directed to Elberta United Methodist Church or Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital LTC.
