Listed in the 1860 Milam County, TX Census, Western District, enumerated July 30th, page 76, Household 513, Dwelling 513 as James Stewart, age 27, born TN. With Rosanah Stewart, age 45, born NC--she's listed as the head of the family; and an Oseas (possibly) McAnnaly, male, age 7, born TX.

Two other Stewarts are listed in the census, with father born in South Carolina, mother in Tennessee (A.J. Stewart, b. abt 1834 TN; J.R. Stewart, b. abt 1840 TN). I think they are probably his brothers. Also listed with him are Martha, age 30, born Tennessee, father born Arkansas, mother born Tennessee; M.R, age 11, daughter, born Texas; R.B., age 8, daughter, born Texas; Almeda, age 5, daughter, born Texas; W.F., age 6/12 born Jan., son, born Texas.

Census records for 1890 were destroyed in a fire in D.C. Few records survived...for TX, some records remain from Ellis County: S.P. no. 6, Mountain Peak, Ovila Precinct; Hood County: Precinct no. 5; Rusk County: Precinct no. 6 and J.P. no. 7; Trinity County: Trinity Town and Precinct no. 2; Kaufman County: Kaufman.

In the 1900 Montgomery County, Texas census, James Robert has his father listed as being born in Tennessee, but in the 1910 census, he has has father listed as being born in Texas. Will also has his father listed as born in Tennessee in the 1900 census, and Texas in the 1910 census.

There is also a John J. Stewart listed in the 1880 Milam County, Texas Census, 104th District, page 62 as 58 years old, born in Georgia, parents both born in South Carolina. Not sure if he's related or not.

According to the Confederate Widow's Pension application filed by Martha in 1918 and 1925, James served as a Private in Co. A, 8th Regiment Texas Cavalry CSA. He enlisted September 25, 1861 in Houston, Texas, and served under the command of General E. Kirby Smith. He was in the McAnnally Scouts. He was captured January 14, 1864, and was a POW for 16 months until his release on May 23, 1865.

Died of inflamation of the thin membrane that lines the wall of the abdomen and organs.

Married Martha when he was 40 years old.

Birth and death dates come from family tree records written in 1970 and from his tombstone.

There is a Mrs. Almeda Stewart, b. 1856, d. 1915 buried in the Rising Star Cemetery in Eastland County, Texas. Maybe a wife of one of James' brothers?
