James is the son of Andrew William and Susannah Wymore Stephenson; the family moved to Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky when he was a small child, and then again to settle in Woodford County, Kentucky. A certificate of marriage was issued to James and Ann Porter in Woodford County, and they lived there for a few years.

James and Ann moved to Greene County, Ohio, about 1804. There they lived adjacent to Ann's sister, Sarah Porter Elam, who was the wife of Josiah Elam, and early pioneer in Greene County. A cabin stands in the pioneer billage near Xenia, Ohio, that was built by Josiah Elam for Susannah McCreary Porter, mother of Ann and Sarah.

The children of James and Ann were reared in Greence County, and their oldest daughter, Susannah, was married there just prior to the Stephenson's migrating to pioneer in Richland Township, Darke County after James' military service in 1812. The first sermon preached in Darke County was given from the home of James Stephenson.

James and Ann named their first son Josiah Elam Stephenson, after Josiah Elam. Josiah Elam Stephenson was murdered by his second wife in 1844, in one of the more notorious crimes in Ohio at that time.

Another son, John Stephenson, became a justice of the peace in Darke County.

Early family members are buried in this cemetery; documentation can be found in the Garst Museum's files and in the Darke County Common Pleas Court Records 1817-1850. Proof that James is the son of William Stephenson of Woodford County, Kentucky, and of William's Revolutionary War service has been verified by the Daughters of the American Revolution in Washington, D.C.
