James came from Fort Cumberland, MD in 1784 and settled in the Glade Farms area of Monongalia County, VA.(Also called the Sandy Creek settlement) (Pioneers of Preston)

James managed the ferry over the Big Sandy River at Morton's Mills (Bruceton Mills), VA. (Spurgeon Family History) He owned 400 aces of land in the Sandy Creek Glades and it was here that Meshach Browning spent several years when a boy.

Also in 1784, General George Washington (with his nephew Bushrod Washington who later was appointed by President John Adams to the U.S. Supreme Court) visited the James Spurgeon Family and lodged there overnight.(http://content.yudu.com/Library/A1ootz/SpurgeonHistory/resources/50.htm)
