1880 he is in Yamhill with what looks like brother John A. Sparks and wife Cynthia but what is odd is that in all later census Cynthia is with brother Benjamin F. Sparks - need to examine this closer to tell if there is a mistake or she had been married to both brothers.

The IGI and Pedigree Resource File etc. say that Sarah Sparks (grandmother of J. L.) died in NC in the 1870s. I question this because a Sarah Sparks arrives in Yamhill Co. OR by the 1860 census age 71 born NC. Also in Yamhill is a Richard Sparks b. NC and a Wiley Sparks b. NC. I think she came to join grown children in Oregon [though I can't believe she made the trip at such an advanced age] In 1880 John A (or Benjamin F.) and James L. (sons of Joseph, Sarah's grandsons) also appear at McMinnville from NC in the place as this Sarah. In 1880 I find Sarah Sparks age 86 in neighboring Polk Co. OR living in the household of John & Eliza Lynch. John is 53 and Eliza is 49 b. NC and Sarah is given as John's mother-in-law age 86 years b. NC.
