Notes
- From "Pioneer Families and Their Descendents", by Virgil Lewis:
- James Smith was a direct descendent of Major Lawrence Smith who was directed to build a fort near the falls of the Rappahannock River in 1776. James was born in VA and moved to the Santee Vallet in the Carolinas. When the Revolutionary War began, he joined a Tory regiment near Spartansburg. His unit was at Bunker Hill, where he was wounded, Kings Mountain and finallly, Yorkstown where he was taken prisoner. He later returned home and in 1788, moved his family over the Blue Ridge Mountains to Cook's fort on Indian Creek in Greenbriar County, now Monroe County, WV. He farmed there and later moved his family, except the married children down the Kanawa Valley and eventually settled in Adams County, OH, where he became one of the earliest settlers.
