Josiah Smith, born about 1780, Fincastle Co., VA, along with the Perkins family, made up the original families that permanently settled Tellico Land Grants along the Jellico River and named it Smithberg, becoming Jellico in 1883, after the death of James b. 1805 and his wife Nancy Meadows Smith, both passing in 1882 of Typhoid fever. Josiah Smith, father of James b. 1805, succeeded in having a post office relocated from Pine Knott, KY, to his new home and he name the post office "Smithburg". Josiah's son, Reverend Thomas Moble Smith, became the postmaster on 29 Oct. 1878 and in 1883 the Post Office was renamed the Jellico Post Office.
