SHAUGHNISS DIED ON FRIDAY-- AFTER BRIEF ILLNESS AT HIS HOME INANGOLA-- Former County Auditor, and State Tax Board Representative WasHighly Respected-- James Shaughniss, formerly auditor of Steuben county,lately representative of the State Tax Board, a well-known citizen inbusiness, lodge and political circles, died at his home in AngolaFriday, January 4, at noon, after a brief illness from heart troublecomplicated by the flu. Mr. Shaughniss had been about the town untilThursday evening, although complaining of a cold in his chest. He aroseFriday morning and was about the home when his wife found him in acollapsed condition, which gradually became worse. At 10:00 o'clock aphysician administered restoratives and he revived and conversed withthose about him and seemed to be improving, when a second sinking spellcame just before noon, from which he failed to rally.
    Mr. Saughniss was a highly respected and useful citizen and hisuntimely death cast a gloom upon the community.
    Obiturary
    James A. Shaughniss, son of William and Eliza Shaughniss, was born inOtsego township, Steuben county, Indiana, August 5, 1867; departed thislife at his home in Angola, Indiana, January 4, 1929, at the age of 61years, four months and 29 days. He grew to young manhood on the farm inOtsego township, and then came with his parents to Angola, Indiana,where he has since lived.
    He pursued his education further in Hillsdale College, Hillsdale, Mich.He was united in marriage on December 24, 1918, with Laura Deller Deal.The grief-stricken widow, together with his two brothers, Wilsey, ofOtsego township, and Guy, of Angola, and one niece and a very largecircle of friends, survive him.
    Mr. Shaughniss was engaged for several years with LaFayetteFenstermaker in the carriage and harness business in Angola, and gaineda wide acquaintance throughout the county. He served for several yearsas a member of the city council or Angola, and in 1908 he was electedauditor of Steuben county and served four years. About two years ago hewas appointed by Governor Jackson as field representative for theIndiana state tax board. His administration of all these trusts wasmarked by a steadfast loyalty to duty, by keen judgment, and by a senseof fairness which won for him the high esteem of the public. In hislast position he was entrusted with the hearing of many large andimportant questions and in his ability in these matters gained for him astate-wide reputation.
    He was a prominent member for many years of Angola lodge No. 180I.O.O.F, having held all offices in the lodge and for many years priorto his death he was a recording secretary of the lodge. He was also amember of Angola lodge No. 236, Free and Accepted Masons, serving in allthe several offices of the lodges, including the position of WorshipfulMaster. He was a regular supporter and attendant during the lastseveral years of the Methodist Episcopal church and Sunday school inAngola.
    In all these various contacts with the public and his fellow men, Mr.Shaughniss became widely known as a man with a high sense of honor,eminently fair and generous in his judgment of other people, loyal andhelpful in every worthy community enterprise. His sudden departure outof a life of great usefullness and activity has cast a great sorrow uponthe entire community.
    Funeral services were held at the late home in Angola Monday afternoon,January 7, conducted by Rev. William E. Hogan of the Methodist church,and Rev. John Humfreys, of the Congregational church. Interment was inCircle Hill cemetery."
