    State of Virginia County of Monongalia: SS
    On this 28th day of August, in the year 1832 personally appeared in open court before the County Court of Monongalia, now sitting, Colonel James Scott, a resident of said County, aged sixty-seven years, who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832, That he enlisted as a musician for three years, in the County of Monongalia aforesaid, in the fall of the year 1776 with his father Captain David Scott of the 13th Regiment of Virginia Continental troops – that early in the spring of 1777 he marched with his company to Fort Kittanning on the Allegheny River about 50 miles from the present city of Pittsburgh, where we remained between 2 and 3 months – that from that Fort we descended the Allegheny River to Pitt [Fort Pitt] in bark canoes, where we remained during the residue of the latter year and following spring – that during the summer of 1778 we left Fort Pitt under the command of Colonel John Gibson, the Army being commanded by General McIntosh, and descended the Ohio in boats to the mouth of Big Beaver Creek, near which he assisted to build a Fort called McIntosh's Fort. That about the month of November 1778 Lieutenant Colonel Richard Campbell of the same Regiment gave him a furlough to remain at home during the following winter – in the spring of the year 1779 his father hired and enlisted a man to serve as substitute in his place for the remainder of the term of his enlistment –
    He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or an annuity except the present, and he declares that his name is not on the pension roll of any Agency of any state.

    Captain John Dent a resident of said County of Monongalia this 28th day of August in the year 1832 personally appeared before the County Court of said County, now sitting, and after being duly sworn according to law doth on his oath state That he has been personally acquainted with James Scott who has signed and sworn to the foregoing declaration in his presence, for about fifty-five years – that he recollects seeing the said Scott as well as he can recollect in the fall of 1776 as a musician in his father's recruiting company – that early in the spring of 1777 the said Scott was in the service as stated in his declaration, and continued so, as therein stated until the fall of 1778, when he the said Dent applied to Colonel Campbell to give the said Scott a furlough to return home during the winter, which was so ordered as stated in said Scott's declaration – that he believes the declaration of the service of the said James Scott to be entirely correct and true.

    [Veteran was pensioned at the rate of $88 per annum commencing March 4th, 1831, for service as a musician for 2 years in the Virginia service.]
