Family legend says that when Job Scogin was serving in the Civil War, he got word that his wife (Rebecca Rhodes) and infant daughter were ill with typhoid. He went AWOL to be with her but she died. He later rejoined his regiment as they were coming home. The Army records show that he was AWOL at the end of the war, but eventually it got cleared up.
