Took over the market garden business from his father and further increased the holdings. 56 acres of the Sweethope Estate were leased and later James and his brother Thomas purchased the entire estate including the mansion. James and his family moved in to the Sweethope mansion. Various crops, vegetables and fruit, were grown throughout the year, most of which was sold at Waverley Market in Edinburgh. He served as a Midlothian County Councillor, Justice of the Peace, Chairman of the Inveresk School Board and acted as Session Clerk in the Free Church in Musselburgh as well as a keen member of the Scottish Horticultural Association. |
