    James J. Scarberry, 75, of Orchard Lane, Washington, died at 8:45 a.m. Monday, March 13, 2000, in Washington Hospital, following a one-week illness.

    He was born August 23, 1924, in New Lexington, Ohio, a son of John P. and Rosella Patton Scarberry.

    Mr. Scarberry was employed by Washington Steel Corp. for 43 years, retiring 10 years ago.

    He was a member of First Lutheran Church of Washington, where he served as a council member, Sunday school teacher, adviser to the youth group and was an usher.

    Mr. Scarberry was 1942 graduate of Trinity High School and attended Washington and Jefferson College.

    He served under Gen. George Patton with the U.S. Army in the European Theater. He was part of the air offensives in Europe, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal and European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, with five bronze stars. He was a past grand Tall Cedar, WACHAGREE Forest 149, of which he was a charter member. He also served as the Muscular Dystrophy Association chairman. He was a 50-year member of Sunset Lodge 623 F&AM, Washington Council 1, Jacques De Molay Commandre 3, Washington Royal Arch Chapter 153. He was a 47-year member of the Boy Scouts of America and served as cubmaster, committee chairman, district commissioner, Order of Arrow and Silver Beaver.

    On December 15, 1945, in Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Scenery Hill, he married Doris I. Crumrine, who survives.

    Also surviving are two sons, James Paul Scarberry of Mechanicsburg and Brian J. Scarberry of McMurray; two daughters, Patricia Ann Scarberry Rubenstein of Canada, and Kathleen Irene Scarberry Fleissner of Washington; seven grandchildren, Erin, Megan and Kymberly Rubenstein, Carl and Kevin Fleissner, James and Jacqueyln Scarberry; and a great-grandson.

    SCARBERRY – Friends of James J. Scarberry of Orchard Lane, Washington, who died Monday, March 13, 2000, will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Additional viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. in First Lutheran Church, Washington, where services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, March 16, with Pastor Kenneth Schott officiating. Interment in Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church Cemetery, Scenery Hill.
