James Russell of Woodside (d. dec1830) marr (apr1808) Mary Stirling (1786-sep1820), see Russell of Maulside, Burkes Landed Gentry (clanstirling,org); death date 1820 may be wrong. James Russell marr Mary Stirling 24apr1808 at Dunblane (familysearch). This may be the mother or halfsister: Mrs. Russell of Woodside d. 16sep1820 at Woodside (Scots Magazine, Old Glasgow Exhibition, notes and indexes). James Russell, esq., of Woodside, late Col. in the Stirlingshire Militia, d. 17dec1830 at Glasgow (Glasgow Herald, notes and indexes). Trust Disposition of James Russell of Woodside (23 pages) Lt Col of Stirlingshire Militia, spouse is Mrs Mary Stirling or Russell, reg 1837 (scotlandspeople); this suggests that Mary Stirling was alive in 1830. John Stirling of Kippendavie (1742-1816) was a W. India planter and mercht in Glasgow (Old Glasgow Exhibition). A brother of Mary, Sylvester Douglas Stirling (1803-1846), marr a dau of David Connell and Isabella Alston (1777-1859) (clanstirling.org, "Lands and lairds of Larbert and Dunipace", J.C. Gibson). Sylvester became laird of Woodside, which he renamed Glenbervie (J.C. Gibson). The Stirlings of Kippendavie were distant relatives of the Stirlings of Keir (Old country houses of the old Glasgow gentry). James Russell was Lt Col in Stirlingshire Militia, late of 7th Hussars (Hardy Bertram McCall). James Russell of Woodside marr Mary Stirling, dau of John Stirling of Kippendavie, a partner in Stirling, Gordon and Co. (J.C. Gibson). Another partner in that firm was in 1795 David Russell (Old country houses of the old Glasgow gentry), presumably father of James. James Russell (No. 5701, matriculated 1795) filius natu maximus Davidis Armigeri Mercatoris in Urbe Glasguensi; grandnephew of 95, nephew of 3450, 5107, 5108, father of, inter alios, Gen Sir David Russell, KCB, Admiral John Russell of Maulside and Graham Russell, Glasgow mercht, afterwards Graham Somervell of Sorn (Matriculation Albums, Glasgow University).
