Often known as Kerguelen Jim.

James was given the middle name Kerguelen after the island where he was born. This island is a French possession. His mother accompanied his father on a whaling expedition. However, the birth was registered at Hobart.

After being born during a voyage to the freezing Antarctic seas, it is ironic that Jim died of thirst in the Western Australian desert (see notes for his father).
