Sir James Primrose of Carrington was born about 1680 ; succeeded his father in 1687, and was served heir to him on 4 November of that year. 5 He was member of Parliament for the county of Edinburgh in the Parliament of 1703, and was, 30 November of that year, created VISCOUNT OF PRIMROSE, LORD PRIMROSE AND CASTLEFIELD, with remainder to the heirs-male of his body, whom failing, to the heirs-male (of the body) of his father. He took his seat in Parliament 6 July 1704, but did not long enjoy his title, dying on 13 June 1706. He was buried at Crichton 2 July.
Lord Primrose married Eleanor, youngest daughter of James, second Earl of Loudoun. She married, secondly, in 1714, John, second Earl of Stair, and died 21 November 1759. By her Lord Primrose had issue :
Archibald, second Viscount of Primrose.
Hugh, third Viscount of Primrose.
William, admitted to the Faculty of Advocates 30 July 1723, died 18 July 1724.
Margaret, died, unmarried, at Edinburgh 16 January 1771.

VI. Sir JAMES PRIMROSE of Carring∣ton, who was chosen one of the commission∣ers for the shire of Edinburgh, to the first parliament of queen Anne, who raised him to the honour of the peerage,* by the title of vis∣count Primrose, lord Primrose of Castlefield, &c. to him and his heirs-male, by letters pa∣tent, bearing date 30th November 1703.
He married lady Eleanor Campbell, daugh∣ter of James earl of Loudoun,* by whom he had three sons, and one daughter.
1. Archibald, his successor.
2. Hugh, who succeeded his brother.
3. William, died in 1724, without issue.
His daughter, Margaret Primrose.
He died in 1706.
- Sir James Primrose of Carrington, third baronet, elected M.P. for the county of Edinburgh in 1703, was created a peer of Scotland, by the title of Viscount Primrose, Lord Primrose and Castlefield, by patent dated at St. James', 30th November that year, with remainder, in default of the heirs male of his own body, to those of his father, Sir William Primrose. His lordship died 13th June 1706.
His eldest son, Archibald, second Viscount Primrose, died, unmarried, in June 1716, when his brother, Hugh, became third viscount. This nobleman served as a volunteer with the earl of Crawford in the Imperial army on the Rhine, and being out on a reconnoitering party, 17th October 1735, he was severely wounded with a musket-ball, which broke his jawbone, and came out a little below one of his eyes. He was appointed lieutenant-colonel of the 33d foot in December 1738, and died 8th May 1741, without issue, when his title became extinct, the remainder being to the heirs male of the body of the first viscount's father.
