JAMES ROBERT PRECHTL, 68, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel who also had been a civilian government employe and self-employed photographer, died of a heart ailment Jan. 28 at the Winchester Medical Center. He lived in Fredericksburg, Va.
Col. Prechtl served in the Air Force 23 years before retiring in 1964 and moving to Arlington. After that, he did accounting and finance work in a civilian capacity for the Air Force and Coast Guard. He retired from the government in 1977, then did wedding and portrait photography until retiring again in 1985. He moved to Fredericksburg the following year.
He was a past chapter president of the Retired Officers Association and a member of the Toastmasters Club.
A native of Cleveland, Col. Prechtl earned a bachelor's degree in general education at the University of Omaha. He served in the Pacific during World War II. After the war, he was stationed in Japan, Thailand, and this country, holding a variety of finance and accounting posts.
Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Mary Louise Boylston Prechtl of Fredericksburg; two daughters, Virginia P. Bowman of Fairborn, Ohio, and Katherine L.P. Rich of Front Royal, Va.; a half-sister, Mary Jane Reardon of Kansas City, Mo., and six grandchildren.
