Codicote Local History Society confirmed that this is the James POINTON who was transported to Australia. 1817 - Tried for theft of grain, a sack, rags and hay. Convicted but pardoned. 1822 - Tried and convicted of horse theft (2 counts). Sentenced to death, this commuted to transportation for life. He was transported on "Eliza" (1). The offences / place of residence were Hatfield and Codicote. At the time of the second offence he was 59 years old. Eliza left Sheerness on 20 July 1822 with 160 males convicts on board and arrived in Sydney, New South Wales, on 22 November 1822 where all 160 convicts disembarked. The captain was Jas. Hunt and the surgeon was Wm. Rae. References
