James Oliphant was born in Fauquier County, Virginia in 1776 and married Jane Rankin of Greene County. James and Jane's son, Dr. James Oliphant settled in McMinn County and married Lavinia Ballard. Tennessee Cousins also lists a Jane Bell as the sister of John Rankin, both the children of George Rankin. Was Jane Rankin the wife of both James Oliphant and a Mr. Bell or were their two Jane Rankins? George Rankin left will in Augusta County, Virginia in 1760, executors were Samuel Henderson and Thomas Patterson, teste. James Craig, Robert Craig and Theobald Maighan. George Rankin's son John's executors in 1790 Greene County were John Craig, James Henderson, Andrew Henderson, and Alexander Henderson.
