    Lived at Hilton Farm, Somerset, Orange County, Virginia. All of his sons served in the Civil War, all enlisting on 17 Apr 1961. All but one survived the war. James was a farmer his entire life. He married Mary Scott in Sep 1828 and they had eight children, 2 daughters and 6 sons. He died at his residence, Hilton Farm, and is buried there. There is a memorial headstone on the family plot at Maplewood Cemetery, Gordonsville, Virginia.

    Mr. James Barbour Newman, a well known and aged citizen of Orange, died at his residence, "Burlington," that county, Monday. His death was due to pneumonia.
    Had he lived until April, he would have reached his 97th birthday.
    He was horn at "Burlington," and spent his whole life there.
    During his early years he held in succession numerous county offices and places of trust. He was a man of the highest type.
    Two sons—Conway and Fitzhugh—and one daughter—Mrs. John Welch—survive him.
