With three children they arrived by horse back and trail in the area of the King's District outside of Caanen then in Albany County (1779 it became Columbia County) NY. There several more children were born including Stephen. The indian uprisings caused the family to remove themselves back to Bristol where James Junior had kept farming interests. Thode (Theodore) was born there before they returned to NY. The church records at Caanen show the baptism of James Alexander Norton the youngest son of James Junior. Upon their return to NY they settled probably on the old homestead but in any case during their absence the John and Chloe (Rowlson) Howe and at least one daughter Dulaney Howe from Connecticut had settled on land that shared a property line.
