[edit] Move to North CarolinaJames Muse got into financial trouble in the early 1750s, and to escape creditors, he left Prince William Co VA and moved to NC; Charles & Lydia Muse went along with him. They settled by mid-1753 in the region that is today northern Moore County, then Cumberland County. [edit] Will of James MuseCumberland County North Carolina; written 30 March 1758 James Muse in the County of Cumberland of North Carolina living at Deep River desire that my wife Sophia have the use of my estate during her natural life and if she see cause to sell my plantation and land to full power to sell and make a Deed and after my wife's decease to be divided as follows. I give to my son James Muse a negro Girl Penelope with what I have already given him; to my Daughter Liddy Ceal one negro Benjamin with which I have already given to her; to my son Thomas Muse one negro Nell and one young mare named Blaze saddle and Bridle and my Gun and Case of Razors and Strap; to my son Daniel Muse one negro women Lucy and a pair of spoon moulds; to my daughter Anne Muse one negro woman Belinda, one bed and furniture; to my Daughter Annabarbury Muse one feather bed, furniture, one pewter dish, six plates, one Iron Kettle, and my old mare Blaze; to my Daughter Sophia Pope Runnels one horse to be valued at five pounds. All the remainder of my estate shall be divided into two parts one part to my Daughter Annabarbury Muse and the other part to be divided between my Daughter Sophia Pope Runnels and her son William Ceal Muse is my desire that after the death or decease of my wife deliver to them at the age of sixteen or day of marriage. My son Daniel have a maintenance out of my estate till he be fourteen years of age.
