James Hope Moulton, [my father], was at least as great a man as his father and uncles. He was born in 1863, was one of the original 16 boys at The Leys, did brilliantly at Cambridge, where he became a fellow of King's College, the first Methodist minister to become a fellow of any Cambridge college. He also gained a London University doctorate, and later was awarded honorary doctorates from Durham, Edinburgh, Groningen and Berlin. He was on the staff of the Methodist Theological College in Didsbury, Manchester, where I was born, and was professor of Hellenistic Greek in Manchester University. He was a pioneer in the modern study of New Testament Greek and wrote several books about it. He was also an expert in Zoroastrianism, the religion of the Parsis in India. In 1915 he went to India to lecture to them in Bombay, but on his way back in 1917 his ship was torpedoed in the Mediterranean and he died. Everyone who knew him loved and admired him, not only for his scholarship (he wrote several other books as well, including some work on the Moulton and Geden Greek Concordance), but also for his Christian character and personality. You can read his biography too, again written by W.F.Moulton, his brother. His wife, my mother, was an Osborn, another Methodist family. Her grandfather was President of the Conference, and her father was also a Methodist minister. I too (Harold Moulton) have written a short biography of my father. Your mother has a copy, and I have some spare ones if you would like one yourself.
