from Richard Pope There is a little book you should read. Chock full of inaccuracies but nonetheless it discusses the McKinneys and other folks who moved to Ellington, Tolland County, CT which I consider the starting off place for this family. Actually James and his wife Margaret started in Windsor and Bolton before moving to Ellington (actually Ellington broke off from Windsor in 1786 so they didn't have to move far). The book is called "Biographical Sketches of Ellington Families" by Darius Crane published c.1889. Really a must for McKinney researchers. Hope you can find it somewhere. .... There are other families involved in Ellington especially the Thompson family. They along with the McKinneys probably came from the North of Ireland, and would be called Scotch-Irish. I have not tracked anything down before the Ellington stuff other than a few deeds in Bolton and Windsor starting in 1746 when James was 'of Hebron' Conn. That's a full 20 years after their arrival in 1726 right after James Jr. was born. I haven't even checked early passenger lists and some might survive. There are no extant church records unfortunately and no vital records show til Ellington starts up in 1786. References
