BIOGRAPHY: The McGovney family of Adams County, Ohio is of Irish origin, however we are unabl e to trace it farther back than James McGovney. James McGovney, when he was a young man in Ir eland, and about to embark for America in 1772, was not unmindful of the needed preparation f or his welfare in that distant country in which he was soon to make his habitation, a lonel y stranger. Among the last things he did before starting was to go to the church in which h e had always worshipped and obtained its recommendation, and which gave him the following cer tificate:
"That James McGovney, a single man, has lived from his infancy in the bounds of this con gregation, and, as
far as we know, always behaved himself in a sober, inoffensive manner, and may be admi tted to the fellowship
of any Christian society, where his lot may fall, is certified in the session of Lisbu rn, the 21st day of May, 1772." ---- James Bryson, District Minister
This Lisburn is a town situated on the lagan River, Ireland, 6 1/2 miles SSW of Belfast, fro m the harbor of which the ship sailed. See Jo Ann Minert's Ref: McGOVNEY IRE1.
