Disambiguation
There appears to be two different Revolutionary War soldiers named James McCullough's in Montgomery County, Kentucky. This James McCullough (1756-1818) who enlisted in 1776 in Stafford County, Virginia and served during the Revolutionary War in Capt. William Washington and Col. William Darke's 3rd Virginia Regiment and served in the Battles of Brandywine and Germantown, and a DIFFERENT James McCullough (1757-1838) of Montgomery County, Kentucky who enlisted as a Private from Rowan County, North Carolina in Col. Martin's 2nd North Carolina Regiment, in Kentucky he served under Capt. William Smith's company and in 1779, he was a Lieutenant in Capt. McGary’s Company of Col. Bowman’s Regiment, and served during an expedition against Indians on the Little Miami. His unit was in the Battle of Blue Licks on 19 August 1782. Military Records clearly show they are two different persons.

The Commonwealth of Kentucky Montgomery County, Sct. On this 7th day of July 1818, before me the subscriber, one of the Judges of the circuit court, in and for the state aforesaid, personally appeared James McCullough aged 62 years; – who being by me first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following statement and declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the late act of Congress entitled "an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War;" that he is a citizen of the state of Kentucky, and resident in the County of Montgomery; and that he was enlisted for two years in Stafford County in the state of Virginia on or about the __ day of October 1776 by one William Washington and served in the company commanded by Captain William Washington of the 3rd Virginia Regiment (said Washington was afterwards Colonel of Cavalry) commanded for a short time by Colonel Darke [William Darke] – that he continued to serve in said Corps, or in the service of the United States, in the Continental Army, against the common enemy, until about the __ day of October 1778 when he was honorably discharged from service at Fredericktown in the State of Maryland; that he was in the service for two years and was in the battles of Brandywine [September 11, 1777], Germantown [October 4, 1777] and some skirmishes – and that he is in reduced circumstances and stands in need of the assistance of his country for support; and that he has lost his discharge, and has no evidence in his power, of his services and discharge, other than what is hereto transmitted. Sworn and declared before me the day and year aforesaid
N. B. This James McCullough the present applicant is not the same man whose examination was taken and certified in behalf of John McCullough of the same date with the foregoing. S/ B. Mills
