This name has been spelled both McKown and McCown. But a recent email adds the following "James McCown was my great-grandfthaer, and it is a matter of pride within the family that the name was spelled "McCown", not McKown. Those were fighting words among my uncles. The 'K' spelling variation did occur in the mid 1700s in Pennsylvania, from where they came, but through the years, and certainly since they settled in Kentucky, the family has always used the 'C' spelling."
