http://www.pa-roots.org/data/read.php?43,437119 JAMES McLANAHAN, son of James and Mary (Cochrane) McLanahan, was born in Greencastle Pennsylvania, 5 October 1735: and died at Greencastle, Franklin County, same State, 17, April, 1823. In 1763 he built a house on a portion of his father’s plantation, and there resided. The house is sill standing. He was a Revolutionary soldier, entering the service as a private in Captain John Jack’s Company of Militia regiment commanded by Colonel Abram Smith, 11 September, 1777. (Pennsylvania Archives, Third Series, XXIV, 615, 625.) He was a prosperous farmer, and a large land owner. During the lifetime of his father, he visited Ireland. He married Isabella Craig, who is said to have been a daughter of James Craig of Cecil County, Maryland. Mr. McLanahan was buried in what is known as the Old White Church Cemetery, but his remains were removed to Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle. His will, dated 23 October, 1822, was proved 21 April, 1823, and disposed of a large estate. He married Isabella Craig, 11 May, 1761. She was born 2 February, 1743, and died 16 September, 1819. The marriage ceremony was performed by the Reverend Samuel Finley, President of Princeton College. Married Elizabeth Boggs. II. John McLanahan, born 5 November, 1764; died 4 September, 1797: married, Elizabeth, daughter of Colonel Thomas Johnston. She was born in 1771, and died, 2 July, 1829. III. Robert McLanahan, born 6 December, 1766; married, Miss Dunlap. IV. Margaret McLanahan, born 4 December, 1768; married, Thomas Brown. V. Mary McLanahan, born 16 December, 1771; married, James Allison VI. William McLanahan, born 25 April, 1773; died 27 December, 1833; married, Mary Potter Gregg, daughter of Hon. Andrew Gregg. VII. Samuel McLanahan, born 11 September, 1775; married, Margaret, daughter of Colonel John Allison. From them descends the Reverend Samuel McLanahan, born in Greencastle on 12 February, 1853; died 3 November, 1912, aged 59 years. He lived in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. Samuel Jr. VIII. Joseph McLanahan, born 11 September, 1780; married, Elizabeth Gordon. IX. Isabella McLanahan, born 11 September, 1780; married Captain Johnston, of Hancock, Maryland. X. Rebekah McLanahan, born 2 January, 1783; married her cousin, John McLanahan, Jr., son of John McLanahan. XI Sarah McLanahan, born 26, 1787; died 10 June 1842 aged 55; married the Reverend Doctor McElroy, of New York. He died 27 December 1833, aged 61.
