James was born about 1787 in Rockingham County, Virginia, one of nine children born to Ralph Lofftus and Sarah Givens. He married Mary “Polly” Beard on December 22, 1807 in Augusta Virginia. She was born about 1790 to John S. Beard Sr, and Barbara Lovingood. He was widowed and married Mary Atwell (Hall), a widow, on June 28, 1819 in Saunton, Augusta County, Virginia. They moved to Christian County Kentucky after the death of his brother George in 1821 and the birth of their daughter Cornelia in 1822.
James Lofftus moved to Merrimac, Crawford County, Missouri before 1840. After 1840, he moved to Tebo, Henry County, Missouri. He started out to California with his daughter Cornelia Cocke and her family in 1852 but died of cholera on the way (James Miller Guinn, Historical and Biographical Record of Southern California, 1902, page 871).
