James F. Laughner, Sr., 87, of Haverhill, MA, passed away on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at Hannah Duston Healthcare Center in Haverhill. Born on October 15, 1936, in Slippery Rock, PA, he was the son of the late Arthur and Romaine (Johnston) Laughner. He was the eldest of six children. James was predeceased by his wife, Frances (Cuticchia) Laughner, who passed away almost exactly thirty-four years earlier; sister, Mary Buffington; and brother, William Laughner. He is survived by his siblings, Barbara, Robert, Rebecca, and their families; his children, Cathy, James, Daniel, Thomas, and their families, including six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was affectionately known as “Jungle” by his friends and family, and “Papa” by his grandchildren. James grew up in a tight-knit family. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving in the 509th Bomb Wing, which was part of the Strategic Air Command during the Cold War. His service eventually brought him to Pease Air Force Base in New Hampshire, where he met his future wife Frances. They married in 1963 and by the end of 1968, had three boys. He liked to sell odds and ends at the flea market, while Frances was buying treasures. He enjoyed traveling to Pennsylvania to visit his family, watching Nascar, and spending time at the Sargent Club.
