Jim was raised by his uncle, Benoni House Lamar. He was killed at the age of 30 years in Louisville, Kentucky when a car hit him while he was riding a bicycle. He was buried in the Lamar Cemetery at Martindale in Hancock County.

His wife ofen said that the morning he was killed, he left home after a heated quarrel with her and she felt very depressed about it for many years afterwards.
