Death of J.S. Jones
At 5 o'clock last evening at his home on west Second street, James S. Jones died of congestion of the lung after several week's illness. Deceased was born in Greenbrier county, West Virginia, Oct. 19. 1833, thus being 57 years of age at his death. He was a student at Hanover College in 1848. In 1864 he held a position as Deputy Internal Revenue Collection, and was a clerk on the steamer Mollie Gratz when she was first built. In later years, he was associated with his brother L. C. Jones as editorial writer on this paper. He leaves a wife and one daughter, a mother, aged 82 years, one sister, Mrs. Jennie Renfrow, of Hanover township, and two brothers, John H., of Martinsville, this State, and L.C., editor of the HERALD, to mourn his death.
The deceased was a man of kindly disposition, without an enemy in the world. As a citizen he has always been held in the highest esteem by his friends and acquaintances, and his death is a great loss to our community, as he was a careful and judicious thinker, who had opinions and convictions of his own and the courage to properly treat them.
The sympathy of the community is extended the bereaved relatives.
