James Jarvis was baptised on 8th August 1819 at Offley in Hertfordshire, son of Edward and Ann Jarvis.
On 15th November 1840 he married Amy Moles, who was from Willian, a few miles the other side of Hitchin, the local market town. They appear to have stayed in Offley for the rest of their lives, with James working as an agricultural labourer. They do not appear to have had any children.
The 1841 census finds James and Amy living at Mill House to the west of Offley, next door to James's parents. The 1861 census finds James and Amy looking after two nieces.
In both the 1881 and 1891 censuses James and Amy were living at Clay Pit Cottages on the western edge of the village. Amy was described as a straw plaiter in 1881.
James and Amy died within a few days of each other in 1895; he was buried just five days before her. He was buried at Offley on 1st April 1895, aged 75.
