Whitewater - James Nelson Humphrey, 70, founder of the Humphrey Pen company, here, died at his home on Main street at 9 a. m. Thursday morning.
He was born in Emerald Grove on October 23, 1858, and attended the district school at the age of 4. At 16 he entered Milton College and graduated in 1879 from the classical course.
He taught district school at Johnstown and at St. Nazianz, Manitowoc county, was first assistant at the high school in Fond du Lac, and became professor of Latin in Whitewater State Teachers' college.
He resigned in 1897 and founded the Humphrey Pen company, of which he was the active head until two years ago, when he retired. He was married on April 9, 1884, to Clara Dunn, Milton. He is survived by two children, Hayward, Whitewater, and Mrs. Helen Bradley, Waterbury, Conn.; one brother, Frank, Janesville; one sister, Mrs. Sophy Caradine, Monroe; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the Congregational church, of which he was treasurer, Sunday at 4 p. m., the Rev. C. E. Ortrander officiating. Burial will be in Hillside.
