WHITEWATER - Mrs. J. N. Humphrey, a prominent Wisconsin clubwoman, died at 7 p.m., Monday in her home here following a long illness.
In 1940 Mrs. Humphrey was named outstanding pioneer clubwoman of the First district, Wisconsin Federation of Women's Clubs. She helped organize the district in Janesville in 1902, serving as its 1st secretary and second president.
Mrs. Humphrey also served as federation treasurer and program chairman. She was a member of the state board for six years. She was president for two years and treasurer of the state federation for two years.
She was health chairman of the city federation for 18 years, helping to establish chest clinics, and served as Anti-Tuberculosis seal sale chairman. She headed groups which packed clothing for World War I victims.
Mrs. Humphrey was secretary of the local Red Cross for 23 years and was active in its fund raising.
She was a charter member of the local Emerson club and had been a member of the Whitewater Congregational church for more than 50 years.
The former Clara Dunn, daughter of Elston Marsh and Helen Elizabeth Clarke Dunn, was born Jan. 23, 1859, in Plainfield, N. J. In 1876 the family moved to Milton where she was graduated from Milton college in 1880.
Her marriage to J. N. Humphrey took place April 8, 1884, after which they moved to Whitewater, where he was a teacher at the Whitewater State Normal school. Mr. Humphrey died May 9, 1929.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. J. C. Bradley, Waterbury, Conn.; a son, Haywood, of Whitewater; five grandchildren and a nephew, Dr. E. L. Bellknap, Milwaukee. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. H. L. Bellknap, and a brother, A. C. Dunn.
The body is at Skindingsrude and Lein funeral home pending arrangements.
