James was a member of Apponegansett meeting and lost his membership for "Marrying out of meeting" as Deborah was member of Presbyterian church! He was one of the most active of his father's sons in town affairs. His name appears frequently in town records. Was surveyor of highways 1711; on jury in 1721; Fence Viewer in 1722; Town Clerk in 1725; Surveyor in 1726; Moderator of Town meetings in 1730; Selectman 1729-33; Assessor 1734-9; Constable in 1737 and Grand Juror in 1742
