James Hill was born on 23 October 1804, in New York City, New York, United States, his father, William Spaulding Hill, was 20 and his mother, Sally Ann Walton, was 18. He married Elizabeth Ingram in 1832, in Alabama, United States. They were the parents of at least 6 sons and 5 daughters. He lived in Chambers, Alabama, United States in 1850. He died after 1860, at the age of 57.
