From Ostrander and Allied Families Between the several generations of the sachems and the Rogers family there existed a strong and intimate friendship, and in this family relationship he and his wife, Sarah, warmly participated. Owaneco and his successors were lavish in their grants of land to Lieutenant Harris and his wife... He was a man of position and influence in his town, was selectman of Colchester in 1730-31 and afterwards, and served in positions of importance in public affairs. From NEHGS Register, Vol 4, 1850, p. 164 ... a tract of 650 acres of land "lying in the North Parish in New London, adjoining to a pond called Obplmtksok, now Gardiner's Lake, a mile or more in length. This land was purchased by Thomas Stanton of Stonington, of Owaneco, chief Sachem of Mohegan, 11 Nov. 1698, and by him sold to Lieut. James Harris, and by him to Joseph Otis. References
