James was married 4 times. Res Jan 1930...Kipling, MI. Francis CANNON said (1997) that his grandfather, James, had a drinking problem. Francis used to follow him around like a little shadow...first gaining a nickname of "Hanny", then "Hanty" and lastly "Hant" (for HANNIGAN).

Francis CANNON also said that James was a bigshot in smelting business of Cleveland-Cliff. Family lived in a company provided house (gone now) (at Kipling?). When the company cleared out, he purchased the house from them.

Died at home, of a paralytic stroke after being ill about 2 yrs.. Lived Kipling 41 years. Moved to Kipling when Cleveland Cliffs started there & was employed as a founder. He did a similar job at the Chemical Plant when Cliffs Co relocated elsewhere. No funeral was held.

A Probate Estate is on file at Delta County courthouse but in Feb 1998 cost of copies was too expensive ($96.00)...there was no Will on file.

1920 James & wife Mildred were enumerated living (?on Michigan Ave) Marquette (city), Marquette co, MI (Upper Peninsula)...his occup: Gatekeeper at Furnace.

James moved to South Dakota near his siblings for a few years in the 1880's (where at least 2 of his children were born).
