Personal History

James Edward Hamilton, styled Lord Paisley,[7][9] was born 29 February 1904[7] (registered in the district of St Marylebone, co. London).[2] Upon the death of his grandfather, James Hamilton, in 1913, he was styled Marquess of Hamilton.[8]

On 1 February 1937,[5] James was appointed to be Deputy Lieutenant for County Tyrone.

On 9 November 1948,[6] James was appointed to be a nominated member of the Ancient Monuments Advisory Council.

James was appointed, by Letters Patent dated 8 January and enrolled 9 January 1951,[3] to be His Majesty's Lieutenant for County Tyrone and Custos Rotulorum of the county.

Upon the death of his father in 1953, James succeeded as Duke of Abercorn and Marquess of Hamilton of Strabane (4th, created 1868), Viscount Strabane (8th, 1701), Lord Hamilton, Baron of Strabane (12th, 1617), and Baron of Mountcastle, co. Tyrone (8th, 1701), in Ireland; Marquess of Abercorn (5th, 1790) and Viscount Hamilton (6th, 1786), in Great Britain; and Earl of Abercorn (13th, 1606), Lord Paisley (13th, 1587), Lord Abercorn (13th, 1603), and Lord Paisley, Hamilton, Mountcastell, and Kilpatrick (13th, 1606), in Scotland.

The Duke of Abercorn was appointed, by letters patent dated 13 June 1975 and enrolled the same day,[4] to be Lord Lieutenant for County Tyrone, until about 1 March 1979 when Lt.-Col. John Henry Hamilton-Stubber was appointed. The Duke's son and heir was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of the county on 1 December 1979.[4]

James Edward Hamilton, 4th Duke of Abercorn (29 February 1904 – 4 June 1979) styled Viscount Strabane until 1913 and Marquess of Hamilton between 1913 and 1953, was a British peer.
